Electrolytic Colloidal Gold with Cinnamon Extract
« on: January 29, 2012, 06:07:44 PM »
I've been experimenting with cinnamon for making colloidal gold.
I call this my 1-1-1 formula

100 mg salt
100 mg citrate
1 ml cinnamon extract
250 ml hot distilled water
350 ma for 20 minutes  ( Used a 50 volt supply for this run )

The color and clarity are really pretty good with this combo.

I would guess at 40+.  I didn't weigh the anode.

I made another batch today using this formula, and my gold anode lost 11 milligrams, and there was no gold on the cathode, so that comes out to be 44 +/- 4 ppm.

250 ml hot distilled water
So you just started out with hot water, but didn't use the hot plate to keep it hot?

Very nice!

I kept it near boiling the entire time.  If I get chance I will test it without the hot plate.

For those who don't have electronic scales, you can try this formula.

1/2 teaspoon table salt
1/2 teaspoon sodium citrate powder
1 tablespoon cinnamon extract
1 gal (or 4 liters) distilled water.

Electrolyze 250ml at a time.

I have tested with cinnamon also and it has worked well, one question I have is this - I have added more sodium citrate, cinnamon extract and also glucose syrup. but I still get a small amount of white cloud in the colloidal gold when I test it with silver nitrate, I have been told this indicates remaining gold chloride in it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The nitrate test is a standard test for the presence of halide ions but is not specific to gold chloride.  Your next step should be to perform the test on an equivalent mixture of the sodium citrate, cinnamon extract and glucose  you used to find out if there is some chloride compound in those chemicals.  Also, if you made the colloidal gold using electrolysis, it is quite possible that there is still sodium chloride in the mix, which would be detected by the silver nitrate.

Thank you kindly Kephra,
I did not use electrolysis this time (my electrolysis setup tends to make cloudy colloidal gold that does not go red, must be wrong voltage, Ma or something). If there where chloride compound in the sodium citrate, cinnamon, glucose mix - would that need further purification or would it be consumable as is ?.
I will test this evening all the same to be sure.

many thanks

Its very doubtful that there is any gold chloride left, especially enough to visibly precipitate silver nitrate.  Lets us know what you find.
