One of my small glass cups has been used for quite while for colloidal gold. I was at a loss when I tried to clean it such that the ruby red hue in it's wall disapears. I tried soap, dish washing liquid, and hydroperoxide to no avail. Finally I tried a few drops of Lugol's solution and it worked! The only drawback is my index finger got stained with iodine, which dispeared on its own sometime later.

Good find for colloidal gold removal!
To get rid of Lugol stains .... dampen powdered Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and rub onto stain. This works on inanimate objects and will probably work on fingers too!

Good tip! We got colloidal gold, iodine, and VC, we can supplement while doing the cleaning :D

I have been gel capping colloidal gold lately. This makes it easy to clean the cup and beaker using dish cleaning liquid.

Great tip there Josie29, if you happen to have Vitamin C powder.
I was able to get similar results using white vinegar (acetic acid).
I did this as an experiment after reading your post.
Stained my finger with Lugol's, soaked a rag with vinegar and used it like a washcloth on the area. Stain gone after a couple minutes.
Decided to try this because I don't have Vitamin C powder but do have a jug of vinegar.
Is there anything vinegar can't do? ;)

You converted the iodine (orange) to iodide (clear).

I did see some of the iodine get onto the rag while doing it. I guess a question would be, "is it going to turn back into iodine on it's own?". If I use it on a stain in fabric and the stain comes back, that would be a problem.
On a different note, I recently used borax as a carpet cleaning agent (with no detergent). Coffee stains (and all others) eliminated quickly. Also soaked the old brown smoke stained blinds (I quit years ago) in borax in the tub (over night) and they came back to their old cream colour. Nice.

Iodides are water soluble, so rinse it out with plain water.
