Power supply AC and DC
« on: November 29, 2019, 10:09:49 AM »
What is the difference between the use of an AC power supply or a DC power supply ?

Is a batch with AC toxic due to the release of copper?
Is a batch with DC safe because no copper is released into the water?

What is the distance between the electrodes ?

Thank you for the answers.

Exactly what do you mean by stating "AC power supply".

Other than a variac, I can't say I've ever seen a power supply that puts out a varying AC voltage.

You need a supply that puts out DC. Current flow must be from anode to cathode at all times otherwise you will pull metallic ions off the cathode.

Whether you plug in that DC supply or run it off a battery matters little.

Are the metal ions of the cathode harmful? In that case, people who use AC power must be warned.

Yes, i mean a variac. There is a guy on the internet that shows the production of collidial gold, and statet the use of a AC power supply.
When AC pulls metallic ions off the copper cathode is there probably a danger to ingest the gold solution.

With google this information is available:

Is copper safe to ingest?
Copper is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in amounts no greater than 10 mg daily. Copper is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth in large amounts. Adults should consume no more than 10 mg of copper per day. Kidney failure and death can occur with as little as 1 gram of copper sulfate. ( 1 gram = 1000 PPM = 1000 parts per million )
One thousandth of a gram ( 1 milli gram --> 0.001g ) in 1000 ml is one ppm so that 1 ppm = 1 mg per liter = mg/Liter.
TDS meters cannot test for contaminants such as copper.

AC is not usable for a decent colloid unless you use two gold or two silver electrodes. And even then it may not result in a clean product.

I.e. when I do colloidal gold, the cathode does not stay perfectly clean but will accumulate some gunk, especially around the water level. Now imagine doing this with AC. Something from that gunk may go back into solution. This may be a very unscientific explanation of what there actually is, oxides etc, but I know enough not to attempt this with AC. Use +30V DC for Colloidal Gold, and constant current X mA DC for Colloidal Silver and you're set.

Pure copper should not be considered safe to ingest, as copper is used in body metabolism and will put several other systems out of whack (antagonist in iron absorption). Trace minerals in food are how you are supposed to ingest all the metals that the body actually uses. Copper, iron, zinc etc. Gold and silver are not metabolized (except for some enzymes afaik), that is why they're safe.

Pulling metallic ions off the cathode, at least if you're using copper is in fact dangerous. Copper compounds are toxic to all mammalian life including aquatic life.  While there may be trace amounts in the human body (we have lots of different trace elements but microscopic amounts, a.k.a. "trace") but copper shouldn't be messed with.

For making colloids I'm not sure an AC supply would work.  For sure, for normal silver colloid I'd suspect not.  Even just finding an AC supply that can be limited to 1-10ma would be really tough and then, I'm not sure it'd work.

This is probably best a question left to someone more knowledgeable like Kephra or cfnisbet.

For sure, for DC Colloidal Silver, if you have a copper cathode, NEVER hook the leads to the cell up backwards.  You'll start pulling copper ions into solution and you really don't want to ingest that stuff.

Regarding a high current DC supply for making colloidal gold (not suitable for Colloidal Silver but its CHEAP), something like this, I recall some individual wanting to try (though we never heard anything back) to use it to make colloidal gold and I believe the consensus is that it would work fine.  The only thing with Aliexpress given everything is coming from China (and this one is free shipping) is that, don't hold your breath. Its gonna take 2-4 weeks to get to you after placing your order but I can't recall I've ever NOT gotten anything nor has anything ever come broken or torn up. Your mileage may vary.

Regarding a high current DC supply for making colloidal gold

This works well. I use DC power supply set to 32 volts and this steps to 80 volts. Could use 12v battery as input. Set output whatever, it's screwdriver adjustable. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32911786708.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.4c0e3ca0jwk644&algo_pvid=22d6e0ff-0701-4aa2-be72-78ff6a80341d&algo_expid=22d6e0ff-0701-4aa2-be72-78ff6a80341d-58&btsid=16b8c172-6720-45a2-bc34-c49652598bc8&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_10,searchweb201603_53

hi Tony, thanks for sharing that product, I have just ordered, Can you tell me what voltages you use for making colloidal gold and for colloidal silver as well as you can go as high up to 80V dc.
thanks again

For making colloidal gold, I recall someone a couple years back trying one of these and having success.  Certainly cheap enough.

The text farther down tells you what you get as far as voltage range and current limit for each different model.
