Making Colloidal Gold with GC
« on: January 24, 2013, 08:48:59 PM »
When making colloidal gold using your recipe you say:

Quote
    7)  Reheat to boiling again.
Allow to stand until color change to ruby red is complete.  If you have a stirrer, use it.  Expect 5 to 10 minutes for completion.

Should we cut the heat when it reaches boiling and let it cool while stiring for another 5, 10 or so minutes?

Being somewhat color blind I am not sure when "change to ruby read is complete" but I can tell when it is getting darker.

Is it easy to boil it for too long?

Thanks

OK

The one on the left I made a few days ago and continued boiling for 10 minutes or so.

The one on the right I just made less than an hour ago and cut the heat shorly after it started boiling but kept stiring for some time.

I beleive I mixed the ingredients the same (I hope so anyway) yet the first one is quite a bit darker. Could I be doing something wrong?

The one on the left looks correct.  The one on the right looks weak, and/or it doesn't have enough reducing agent.

I suggest adding a few more drops of sodium carbonate and some more maltodextrin to see if it darkens.

I heat mine to the boiling point in the microwave and turn it off as soon as it starts boiling.  The reaction is always done by that time.

Should I heat it to boiling again also?

That seems to have done it. They are both about the same now. So, I guess that answers my first question. I should allow it to continue to boil until it darkens. Too much boiling does not seem to be a concern.

Thanks. :)

Are there any concerns in microwaving colloidal solutions filled with metalllic(silver/gold) particles?.. I've done it before but just started wondering if it does anything to those precious metal particles.. Probably non-issue for 'nano' particles but Just curious.. Thanks!

There is no problem with using microwaves to heat your solutions.  The frequency of the microwaves is not resonant with nanoparticles.

I just made my first batch of colloidal gold using the gold chloride method. Nice dark ruby red; I followed the basic recipe.
Sorry but for some reason I am having trouble uploading a pic.

Well you can obviously connect to this website, and i have never seen that error message before, so I suspect the error is outside the scope of the forum.

Perhaps it's my browser (Mozilla) I will try another one later. Thanks

mine looks like the one on the right ("weak") and you stated to add "a few more drops of sodium carbonate".... I'm using the electrolysis method, would you still recomend using s carbonate and how much if making 500 ml batches? i use S. citrate, salt, and corn syrup, or do i have to add anymore of the 3 i just mentioned to make it darker?
