Title: Adventures in reducing with tincture.
Post by: Stagno on March 14, 2019, 08:23:10 PM
Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone can advise me as to what is happening here. I've been trying to use hemp tincture as reducer and stabilizer as per PeterXXL's instructions, but to no avail. The procedure seems to go ok and the end result is clear not turbid,so all good there, but I keep getting am oily/silvery residue that floats on the surface, filtering through a coffee filter doesn't remove it. I'm thinking that maybe I'm not getting the tincture making right, but have no clue as to what I'm doing wrong.

Here's some pictures of my results. Picture 1 is of the 120ppm batch showing the residue on the surface, picture 2 is it diluted to 20ppm with a glass of my standard 40ppm malto reduced for comparison (the lighter coloured one on the right is my standard 40ppm) and picture 3 is of the same 20ppm batch showing the surface residue.

Any advice will be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

I had same thing. Then dawned on me to strain with unbleached-coffee filters.

Thanks guys. Do you think it's safe to drink?  I did filter it with a nylon coffee filter, but it stayed the same,do paper ones work better?

Thanks Kep,I'll give it a go. Have you ever experienced the same thing when using a tincture?

I think my tincture is safe,it's just hemp flowers and alcohol as instructed by PeterXXL,I can't see there being anything poisonous in there.

Is it possible that your tincture is too strong and/or too much was put in? Maybe your bud was that much better than Peter's? It is plant oil dissolved in alcohol. The oil might homogenize in when the solution is hot and stirred. Anything left over after the capping and cooling isn't going to stay homogenized for long and will float to the top like any oil would.

A paper coffee filter should absorb the oil but don't think a nylon one would.

Skimming it off as Kephra mentioned and use less next time?

Neofizz,

Yes it's very possible my tincture is too strong,it's my first attempt and I'm finding it hard to get any good tincture advice. I did follow Peters instructions though there are a couple of vagueries that need clarification . I had the same thoughts about dissolved oils too,but have no clue as to how to resolve that issue,I used very similar bud to Peter, just industrial hemp, maybe I need to remove all the seeds first as that may be the source of the oils.

I'll certainly get myself some paper coffee filters and try that.

Thanks for your input.
